Watch | SC’s SIR scrutiny: 'Strong court can make big difference'
Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde discusses apex court notices to the Election Commission, procedural integrity, and restoring faith in the electoral process
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Election Commission (EC) following investigative media reports on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and internal procedural friction within the poll body.
On Monday (October 5), the apex court questioned the alteration of Form 6 and sought clarity on whether decisions were taken unilaterally or with the consensus of the full Commission. According to Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde, “A few well-aimed questions from the bench often decide the trajectory of a case.” A strong court and a clear sense of justice, he says, can alter outcomes even without immediate final orders.
In this episode of AI with Sanket, The Federal speaks with Hegde about the legal limits of suspending a constitutional authority, the Supreme Court’s role in examining the functioning of the election body, and whether public trust in the country’s electoral process can be restored.
