Are more blows awaiting TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee?

Rebel TMC MPs meet Suvendu at Union minister's house: More trouble for Mamata?

The significant talks take place even as the supremo and Abhishek Banerjee attend an INDIA bloc meeting in the national capital

On a day when Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee attended a key meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) in New Delhi, several rebel MPs of the party were reportedly in talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the residence of Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

The parliamentarians' alleged 'secret' meeting triggered speculation over the party facing more splits, this time in Parliament. The TMC witnessed a massive implosion in the state, which it ruled for 15 years before losing power in this year's Assembly elections, with the majority of its elected MLAs deciding to back Ritabrata Banerjee, one of their dissenting colleagues, who became the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly with their backing despite getting expelled by the top leadership.

Speculation was rife that the majority of the TMC MPs in Lok Sabha (the party has 28 members there) were also planning to quit the camp, particularly because they were reportedly not satisfied with the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata's MP nephew, who is also the TMC's leader in the Lower House. According to a report by Bengali daily Anandabazaar Patrika, 11 rebel MPs were present in the meeting with Adhikari.

Senior RS MP quits TMC

The party already received a blow on Monday (June 8) morning as one of its senior members in the Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, resigned and slammed the party leadership for the crushing defeat in the 2026 elections. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, another senior MP in the Lok Sabha, has also spoken out against the party repeatedly in recent times and stepped down from all party positions that she held. Roy was reportedly present at the meeting at Yadav's residence, the Bengali report said.

The TMC is currently the fourth-largest party in Parliament after the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and the Samajwadi Party. A setback for the party would deliver a blow to the anti-BJP space in the national political landscape.
