Raging controversy over Form 7 voter deletions: ECINET to blame?
Election data scientist Pyarelal Garg and voter rights activist Tara Rao examine the issue in detail
After The Indian Express probe, The Hindu has come out with a damning report on rampant voter deletions through Form 7 under the SIR process in Karnataka. The report says that over 61,000 Form 7 applications were filed by election officials in the state, but none cited a reason. Officials say they were instructed to file Form 7 applications for shifted, duplicate, underage, deceased and non-citizen voters, but the auto-generated forms left the reason blank.
Likewise, in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, an official investigation revealed that changes to 13,779 Form 8 (correction of entries) applications were entered between May 31 and August 29, 2026. Officials found no corresponding physical Form 8 applications or office records to support the approved changes.
And the news just coming in is that the UP CEO has ordered scrutiny of voter forms amid this controversy. Is the mystery deepening around ECINET, the centralised software used by the Election Commission? The Federal spoke to a panel of experts about this in the latest episode of Capital Beat.
