Punjab, Telangana, Andhra send most students abroad: Report

The spending by Indian students on overseas education is expected to shoot up to $70 billion by 2025 – from $47 billion in 2022, says the report

Punjab, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra account for the maximum number of Indian students who go abroad to study and this number is expected to touch 20 lakhs by 2025, a report says.

While Indian students have traditionally focussed on the US, the UK, Canada and Australia for higher education, the new choices include Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Ireland, Singapore, Russia and France.

According to the report, some 10.9 lakh Indian students pursued their education abroad in 2019, going up by 7 per cent in 2022 to around 13.24 lakh.

If the current growth rate of 15 per cent is sustained, the number could swell to an estimated 20 lakh by 2025.

The report has been compiled by University Living Accommodations Pvt Ltd, a global student-housing managed marketplace, and One Step Global, a specialised market entry firm.

They help global academic institutions, academic service providers and government organisations to grow their footprint across Asia.

Student expenditure

The report, which studies the dynamics of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad, said the top Indian states sending students abroad are Punjab, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Maharashtra (12.5 per cent each), Gujarat, Delhi/NCR and Tamil Nadu (8 per cent each) and Karnataka (6 per cent).

It said the spending by Indian students on overseas education was expected to zoom to $ 70 billion by 2025 – from $37 billion in 2019 and $47 billion in 2022.

“If the sector continues to grow at the current rate of 14 per cent, the projected spending by Indian students on overseas education is expected to skyrocket to an astounding US$ 70 billion by 2025."

The report addresses the difficulties faced by Indian students in finding suitable accommodation in their destination countries.

"Governments across the world need to put in place a national housing strategy, establish a clear, comprehensive, and coordinated approach to addressing the student housing problem through setting national goals for student housing availability and affordability, establishing guidelines for local student housing policies and providing funding and resources for student housing initiatives," it said.
