Being longest-serving elected PM is not Modi’s only record; here are more

With over 4,399 uninterrupted days as PM and 9,000+ days in elected office, Modi has set many milestones, big and small, that may remain unbeaten for decades

Narendra Modi achieved a significant professional milestone on Wednesday (June 10) by setting a national record for the longest-serving continuously elected prime minister of India, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi has completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, officially surpassing Nehru’s record of 4,398 uninterrupted days as India’s first prime minister (calculated from the conclusion of India’s first democratic general elections in 1952 until his passing in 1964).

Nehru, however, still holds the record for being India's longest-serving prime minister, with 16 years and 286 days between 1947 and 1964. Modi, who loves to point out the flaws in Nehru's leadership and statesmanship at every available opportunity, also became the only prime minister after the Congress stalwart to become the prime minister upon his debut as a member of Lok Sabha in 2014.

Anyhow, being the longest continuously serving prime minister is not the only major record set by Modi. He has already set several milestones in his illustrious political career—both big and small—that may be difficult for any politician to break in the years to come.

Here are some of his notable milestones:

Longest-serving elected head of government

On March 22 this year, Modi overtook former Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling as the longest serving head of an elected government in India.

Combining his 13-year tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat (2001–14) and his time as prime minister, Modi’s total executive leadership exceeds 9,000 days, a record unmatched by any other Indian leader.

The others on the list after him are all former chief ministers, including Chamling’s 8,930 days, Naveen Patnaik with 8,848 days as the former chief minister of Odisha, and the late Jyoti Basu with 8,539 days in office as the chief minister of West Bengal.

Longest serving chief minister of Gujarat

Modi also holds the record for being the longest-serving chief minister of Gujarat. He held the office continuously for 12 years and 227 days (4,607 days), from October 7, 2001, until he resigned on May 22, 2014, to assume office as the Prime Minister of India.

The other longest-serving CMs in the state are a distant second or third with less than six years in office. The next on the list are Congress’s Hitendra Kanaiyalal Desai (5 years, 244 days from 1965–1971), Congress’s Madhav Singh Solanki (5 years, 137 days in multiple terms from 1976–1989), and the late Vijay Rupani of the BJP (5 years, 37 days from 2016–2021).

In fact, Modi’s Gujarat record laid the groundwork for his transition to national leadership.

Other records

While the above three are the most significant records, the BJP has listed Modi’s other achievements too from time to time.

First PM born after Independence: Born on September 17, 1950, Modi is the first person born in Independent India to ascend to the office of prime minister.

Three consecutive national mandates: Modi is the first non-Congress leader, and on a par with Jawaharlal Nehru, to win three consecutive Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, and 2024).

Six consecutive election victories as party head: Modi has successfully led the BJP to victory in six back-to-back major elections, including three state assembly elections in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three general elections to the Lok Sabha (2014, 2019, 2024).

First non-Congress absolute majority: In 2014, Modi became the first leader from outside the Congress to secure an outright single-party majority in the Lok Sabha.
