Araghchi reaffirms Iran's commitment to Hormuz security in meeting with Jaishankar

Iran’s foreign minister met S. Jaishankar at the BRICS meeting in India, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to Hormuz security and regional stability

In remarks carrying a broader geopolitical message during the ongoing BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting , Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday (May 15) held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, where he reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to maritime stability and the uninterrupted movement of global trade routes.

Following the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister said Tehran would continue to perform what he described as its historic responsibility in maintaining security in one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways.

“In fruitful engagement with my host External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, discussed regional developments and clarified that Iran will always carry out historical duty as protector of security in Hormuz. Iran is a reliable partner of all friendly nations, who can rely on safety of commerce,” stated Araghchi in a post on X.

Hormuz security and regional messaging

The reference to the Strait of Hormuz comes at a time when tensions across West Asia continue to shape diplomatic engagements, with Tehran positioning itself as a key stakeholder in the regional security architecture.

Araghchi later used the BRICS platform to launch a strong criticism of US’ foreign policy approach, saying Iran’s confrontation with American pressure tactics was neither new nor unique. He urged member states that have faced similar forms of coercion to respond collectively.

“Told BRICS FMs summit: Iran's resistance against U.S. bullying is not an unfamiliar battle. So many of us encounter slight variations of same repugnant coercion. High time for us to jointly step up and work towards making clear that those practices belong in dustbin of history,” said Araghchi.

Call for institutional independence

While delivering Iran’s official statement at the ministerial gathering, Araghchi also focused on the need for reform in global governance structures and called for international institutions to remain insulated from political influence.

Support for India’s chairship

Meanwhile, in the Chair’s Statement and Outcome Document adopted during the meeting, foreign ministers from BRICS extended their full support to India’s chairship of the grouping in 2026.

The ministers endorsed India’s proposed theme, Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability, noting that deeper cooperation among member nations could help address common economic and geopolitical challenges in a balanced and inclusive manner.

The member states also reviewed progress made under the BRICS cooperation framework and backed stronger coordination across key priority areas, including capacity building, innovation, sustainable development and long-term economic resilience.
