Indian killed in Dammam airport attack in Saudi Arabia, two others injured

One Indian national was killed and two injured in an attack at Dammam airport in Saudi Arabia, the Indian Embassy confirmed, amid wider regional hostilities

An Indian national died in an attack on Dammam airport in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night (October 21), and two other Indians were injured, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh said on Thursday (October 22). The incident followed a drone attack at the Shaybah oilfield a day earlier, in which another Indian national was hurt.

Indian Embassy confirms death

The embassy said Saudi authorities had notified it of the casualties. It is now seeking more information and reaching out to the families concerned.

"One Indian national was among two people who unfortunately lost their lives in the attack on Dammam airport yesterday night and two Indian nationals were injured," the embassy said in a social media post.

The embassy expressed sympathy for the family of the person killed and wished those injured a quick recovery. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the deceased, and we wish speedy recovery of the injured,” it stated.

Airport strike comes amid attacks across Saudi Arabia

The people behind the airport attack have not been publicly identified by Saudi authorities. The strike comes amid a series of attacks on airports and energy facilities across the kingdom. Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been involved in a prolonged campaign against Saudi Arabia.

Another attack was reported at the Shaybah oilfield on Wednesday. The Indian Embassy posted late that night that it had "learnt that one Indian national was injured in an attack at Shaybah oilfield today".

Shrapnel from an intercepted drone killed two people at Shaybah, one Filipino and one Nepali national. Two others were hurt, including an Indian and a Pakistani national, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy said.

Shaybah oilfield remains a key energy site

Saudi Aramco runs the Shaybah oilfield in southeastern Saudi Arabia. The site is located in the Rub' al-Khali desert, close to the border with the United Arab Emirates.

The field is a significant part of the kingdom's oil production infrastructure. Saudi authorities have not publicly identified the party responsible for the attempted attack.

The Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have been engaged in a long-running conflict with Yemen's internationally recognised government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

India condemns attacks

Earlier this month, an Indian national was killed, and several others were injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

India has strongly condemned the attacks on Saudi Arabia, particularly those targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure, and called for an immediate end to the hostilities.

The Indian Embassy has issued advisories urging Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia to remain alert, follow instructions issued by local authorities and take shelter indoors during aerial attacks.

It has also cautioned them against filming or sharing images and videos of drone or missile interceptions and their impact sites, warning of possible legal consequences under Saudi law.
