Heavy rains lash TN, Puducherry, Kerala; schools closed in 8 TN districts

Several places in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala were waterlogged, and a landslide on the Sabarimala highway disrupted traffic

Heavy rains have been lashing certain parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the rains to a cyclonic circulation in the lower tropospheric levels.

Due to forecast of heavy rains on Thursday (November 23), the authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in eight districts of Tamil Nadu – Theni, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Pudukottai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, and the Nilgiris.

In the Nilgiris, traffic on the Mettupalayam-Coonoor road was disrupted due to a landslide and fallen trees. Several trains between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam were cancelled on Thursday because of rocks and mud on the railway tracks. The Railways announced that passengers of the cancelled train services would be given full refunds.

In Kerala, several places in Pathanamthitta district were waterlogged due to heavy rains on Wednesday (November 22). The downpour was so heavy that there was a landslide on the Sabarimala highway that prevented the flow of vehicles. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Pathanamthitta and two other districts in Kerala.
