14 migrant workers in Dubai allege unpaid wages, appeal to Jharkhand govt for safe return
Fourteen migrant workers from different districts of Jharkhand facing difficulties allegedly due to unpaid wages in Dubai have appealed to the state government for facilitating their safe return, an official said on Monday (February 2).
Team leader of the state migrant control cell, Shikha Lakra told PTI that they have been informed about the 14 migrant workers from Giridih, Hazaribag, and Bokaro districts who have sent a video alleging that the private company has not paid wages and they are also being forced to work overtime.
"This is causing them difficulties in terms of accommodation and food. The stranded labourers have sent a video sharing their plight and appealing to the government for help. They sent the video to Sikandar Ali, who works for the welfare of migrant workers," said Lakra.
"We are trying to speak to the migrant workers and verify their documents to begin the process of talking with the Indian Embassy and UAE government officials for safe repatriation of the migrant workers," the official said.
Social activist Sikandar Ali has demanded that the central and state governments take concrete diplomatic steps for the safe return of the labourers.

Will consider price hike due to commodity cost escalation: Maruti Suzuki
Market leader Maruti Suzuki India is considering a price increase for its vehicles due to rising commodity costs, even as demand remains strong following GST rate reductions, a senior company official said on Monday.
Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) Partho Banerjee said input costs, particularly for precious metals, have risen sharply, prompting the company to review prices in the coming months. While Maruti Suzuki is trying to absorb part of the cost increase, Banerjee said a price hike may be inevitable if pressures persist.
The company is currently facing production constraints, with pending orders of 1.75 lakh vehicles. In January alone, it received 2.78 lakh bookings and posted its highest-ever monthly sales of 2,36,963 units, while exports touched a record 51,020 units.
Banerjee said Maruti has introduced a price protection scheme for customers who booked vehicles earlier, ensuring they are shielded from any near-term price increases. He added that demand has been driven by first-time buyers entering the four-wheeler segment.
On the outlook, Banerjee said the passenger vehicle industry could return to a 6–7 per cent growth trajectory, supported by GST reforms and increased infrastructure spending announced in the Union Budget. He added that production constraints are expected to ease once new capacity comes online, including a new plant in Haryana by April 2026.

EAM Jaishankar embarks on 3-day visit to US
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (February 2) embarked on a three-day visit to the US to attend a Washington-led ministerial meeting on critical minerals supply chain.
Jaishankar's visit assumes significance as it is being seen as an opportunity to address the sharp downturn in the relations between the two strategic partners.
It is expected that the minister will hold bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials of the Trump administration.
"External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the United States from February 2 to 5 to participate in the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio," the external affairs ministry said in a statement.
It said the ministerial will focus on supply chain resilience, clean energy transitions, and strategic cooperation in critical minerals.
India-US ties have been reeling under severe stress after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duties, for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. Apart from the tariff issue, the relations witnessed a downturn on a number of other issues that included Trump's claim of ending the India-Pakistan conflict in May last year and Washington's new immigration policy.

Supreme Court grants bail to three accused in Pune Porsche crash case
The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to three accused in the 2024 Pune Porsche crash case that killed two people, while making sharp observations on parental responsibility in incidents involving juveniles.
A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said parents must be held accountable for giving minors access to cars and money, calling such conduct “unacceptable”. The court noted that substance abuse was a separate issue, but questioned the failure of parents to control their children.
The bail was granted to Amar Santish Gaikwad, Aditya Avinash Sood and Ashish Satish Mittal, all accused in the alleged blood sample swapping case linked to the accident. Gaikwad was accused of acting as a middleman and paying ₹3 lakh to manipulate the juvenile’s blood test results, while Sood and Mittal’s blood samples were allegedly used in place of those of the minors present in the car.
The accident occurred on May 19, 2024, when a Porsche allegedly driven by a 17-year-old under the influence of alcohol hit and killed two IT professionals in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. The Bombay High Court had earlier rejected bail pleas of the accused in December.
The case triggered nationwide outrage after the Juvenile Justice Board initially granted bail to the minor on lenient conditions, including writing an essay on road safety. The order was later modified, and the juvenile was sent to an observation home before being released following a high court order.

Dispute over sharing of Pennaiyar river water: SC directs Centre to set up tribunal
The Supreme Court on Monday (February 2) directed the Centre to constitute a tribunal for adjudicating the dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over sharing the waters of the Pennaiyar river, and to issue an appropriate notification with a month.
The direction came from a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and NV Anjaria.
"We, therefore, find no reason to refrain from directing the Central government to issue an appropriate notification in the official gazette and to constitute a water disputes tribunal for the adjudication of the inter-se water dispute between the parties herein within a period of one month from today," Justice Nath said while pronouncing the order. The detailed verdict is awaited.
The Tamil Nadu government moved the top court in 2018 through its original suit filed against Karnataka over work being done on check dams and diversions on the river. It said water in an interstate river was considered a national asset and no state can claim exclusive right over it.

PV Anvar to contest from Beypore as UDF candidate, says Sunny Joseph
KPCC president Sunny Joseph on Monday said that Trinamool Congress leader P V Anvar will be the UDF candidate from the Beypore Assembly constituency in Kozhikode district, even as the front is yet to officially announce its list of candidates.
Anvar, a former LDF MLA who later joined the Trinamool Congress after quitting the Left front, has been active in Beypore in recent weeks amid speculation that he would take on Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas in the upcoming Assembly elections. Joseph expressed confidence that Anvar would win the seat as the UDF nominee.
While Anvar stopped short of formally confirming his candidature, he criticised the CPI(M)-led government and accused it of being dominated by a single family. He also alleged that Riyas had failed to address issues faced by ordinary people and questioned the LDF’s statewide development rally.
The CPI(M) and the LDF have not responded to Anvar’s allegations.

Dalai Lama says Grammy win reflects shared responsibility, not personal achievement
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday said his Grammy Award win was not a personal achievement but a recognition of a shared universal responsibility.
The Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, won his first Grammy in the category of best audio book, narration, and storytelling recording for his spoken-word album, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, at the 68th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
He edged out other nominees, including Kathy Garver for Elvis Rocky & Me: The Carol Connors Story, Trevor Noah for Into The Uncut Grass, Ketanji Brown Jackson for Lovely One: A Memoir and Fab Morvan for You Know It's True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli.
Reacting to the prestigious international recognition, the Dalai Lama expressed gratitude and humility, saying he did not view the award as a personal achievement.
"I receive this recognition with gratitude and humility. I don't see it as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility," the Dalai Lama said.
"I firmly believe that peace, compassion, care for our environment, and an understanding of the oneness of humanity are essential for the collective well-being of all eight billion human beings. I am grateful that this Grammy recognition can help spread these messages more widely," he said.
