October 10 Delhi protest: Ex-senior cops weigh in on strategies, ways to avoid face-offs
Former IB director Yashovardhan Azad and ex-UP DGP Vikram Singh evaluate law and order preparedness, Gen Z protest tactics, and institutional deadlocks
At a time when the conduct of police against protesters is under scrutiny, especially in the wake of the July 20 students’ protest in Delhi, former DGP of Uttar Pradesh Vikram Singh says a combination of pre-emptive planning, intelligence and tact goes a long way to achieve balanced and tactical responses while handling crowds.
His remarks come as the national capital is preparing for a major demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 10.
Singh says to prevent chaos, security agencies must prepare for worst-case scenarios with multiple operational backups. Stressing the importance of tactical responses in such situations, Singh cites an example of modern protest tactics. He says in modern protests, women demonstrators are often placed at the front lines. And the perfect way to handle the situation is to deploy women commandos and maintain professional composure to prevent tragic escalations and allegations of misconduct, he says.
In this episode of AI With Sanket, Singh and Yashovardhan Azad, former Special Director, Intelligence Bureau, analyse policing strategies, crowd dynamics, and whether systemic lessons have been learned.
