Cyclone Tej: IMD sounds alert in Mumbai, Pune and Konkan belt
private forecasting agency Skymet Weather says the storm is heading for Yemen-Oman coast
A low-pressure area over the southeast and the adjoining southwest Arabian Sea has developed into a depression and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 21 morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
The cyclonic storm may hit Mumbai, Pune, the Konkan region and Lakshadweep.
Met officials said that the possibility of the low pressure intensifying into a cyclonic storm is high, according to media reports, and may lash Mumbai, Pune and the Konkan region bringing down the temperatures substantially. According to an assessment by the Met Office, the Madden–Julian Oscillation is active which may also intensify the storm.
The name Cyclone Tej was given by India and the IMD is one of the six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres that monitors cyclones over the north Indian Ocean. The centre also provides advisories on tropical storms and cyclone surges to 13 member countries.
Meanwhile, private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said that a majority of models indicate the storm is heading for the Yemen-Oman coast.
