Why 10 states celebrate formation day on November 1

AP, MP, Karnataka, Kerala, TN, and Lakshadweep were formed on this day in 1956, while Punjab and Haryana came up in 1966, and Chhattisgarh was carved out of MP in 2000


Many states and Union Territories are celebrating their formation day on November 1.

President Droupadi Murmu took to social media to greet the residents of various states and Union territories on their formation day.

States like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep came into being on this day in 1956. While Punjab and Haryana were formed in 1966, and Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000.

In a post in Hindi on X, Murmu said, "I extend my heartfelt greetings to the people of Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshadweep on their formation day."

"I wish that the people of all these states and Union territories continue to contribute to the country's development journey and that their lives be filled with peace and prosperity. I wish them and all the countrymen a bright future," she added.

PM Modi's greetings to states

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too greeted the people of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana and Chhattisgarh on their states' formation day.

In posts on X, Modi highlighted various features of these states as he extended his wishes to the people living there.

Kannada Rajyotsava

Karnataka celebrates its formation day as Kannada Rajyotsava. 'Kannada Rajyotsava' is a very special occasion, recognising the exemplary culture and traditions of Karnataka, said PM Modi.

"This state is blessed with outstanding people, who are powering growth and innovation across sectors. May the people of Karnataka always be blessed with happiness and success," he added.

Karnataka was formed on a linguistic basis on November 1, 1956, and comprised Kannada-speaking populations spread across the State of Mysore, Hyderabad, and the Madras Presidency. The state was originally called Mysore but was renamed Karnataka in 1973. In Karnataka, the state formation day is celebrated as Karnataka Rajyotsava.

Madhya Pradesh

Modi also noted that Madhya Pradesh is blessed with bountiful natural resources and cultural heritage and described Chhattisgarh as a state known for its impressive folk traditions and tribal culture, wishing the states continued development.

Madhya Pradesh came into existence on 1 November 1956 following the reorganisation of states. It was created by merging the erstwhile Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal states.

Kerala

In another post, Modi hailed Kerala. "Kerala is known for its mesmerising landscapes, vibrant traditions and hardworking people. People from Kerala have made their mark all over the world, across different fields. May the people of the state keep progressing in the times to come." Haryana is known for its rich and historic heritage and has always made important contributions to the country's development, the prime minister added.

The state of Kerala was formed on 1 November 1956 under the States Reorganisation Act, merging Malabar, Travancore, and Cochin based on the common language spoken in the area – Malayalam. In Kerala, the formation day is known as 'Keralappiravi'.

Andhra Pradesh

Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah too greeted the people of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh on their statehood day, saying they had contributed immensely to nation-building.

In separate messages on X, Shah expressed hope that the states would continue the journey of progress and development uninterrupted in the coming years.

"Best wishes to our sisters and brothers in Andhra Pradesh on their statehood day. With its vibrant culture and rich literary traditions, Andhra Pradesh has made Bharat proud by its immense contribution to nation-building. May the state touch new heights of development," he said.

Expressing heartfelt greetings to the "sisters and brothers" in Karnataka on "Rajyotsava", the home minister said that as proud inheritors of a glorious heritage, the people of Karnataka had contributed immensely to enhancing the nation's pride.

"Praying for the state's continued progress," he said.

Conveying warm greetings to the people of Kerala on the occasion of the state's formation day, also known as "Piravi", Shah said Kerala had strengthened Bharat over the years by leveraging its unique cultural heritage.

"May God bless the state to prosper further," he said.

Veerbhoomi Haryana

Haryana was formed on November 1, 1966, as the seventeenth state of India, under the Punjab Reorganisation Act passed by Parliament to to reorganise the state of Punjab and create two new states – Punjab and Haryana.

Extending greetings to the residents of "Veerbhoomi" Haryana on its foundation day, the home minister said the hardworking farmers of the state, the soldiers dedicated to the nation's defence, and the energetic sportspersons were playing a leading role in accelerating the country's development journey.

They are making the country secure and bringing glory to it on global platforms, he said.

"The way Haryana has been progressing on the path of development and progress for the last decade, I wish that this journey of prosperity continues uninterrupted," he said in Hindi.

Chhattisgarh

Shah also conveyed his greetings to the people of Chhattisgarh, which he said was full of the beauty of tribal culture and mineral wealth.

"I wish that the journey of preservation and promotion of tribal culture and art in Chhattisgarh continues at an uninterrupted pace and the state reaches the pinnacle of development and progress," he said.

Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000 with its 16 Chhattisgarhi-speaking districts. In Chhattisgarh, the day is celebrated as Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava.

The home minister extended greetings to "all the sisters and brothers" of Madhya Pradesh, which he called the land of cultural centres, spiritual heritage and natural beauty.

"Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a golden period of preservation of its rich cultural heritage and public welfare works. I wish for all round development of the people of the state," he said.
