CM Pinarayi Vijayan holds all-party meet; more than 1,500 rescued so far from landslide-hit areas of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha

Congress leader and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are in Wayanad to visit the landslide-affected areas and meet people who have been injured and lost their homes in the calamity.

Addressing the media after an all-party meeting on the issue on Thursday (August 1), Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the rescue mission in landslides-hit Mundakkai region might take some more days and that a cabinet sub-committee comprising four ministers has been appointed to coordinate the rescue efforts.

The four ministers –Revenue Minister K Rajan, Forest Minister AK Saseendran, PWD and Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas, and SC/ST Department Minister O R Kelu – will camp in the district.

The chief minister said the rescue attempt is not something that will be over in a few days.

"This rescue attempt is not something which can be resolved in a short period of time. As of now, 12 ministers are camping in Wayanad. Now the all-party meeting has decided that four ministers will camp here to coordinate the rescue operations," Vijayan said.

Vijayan said while it was initially difficult to begin the search operations due to the massive accumulation of soil, now that the Army is completing the construction of the Bailey Bridge, the mission will be easier.

The construction of a Bailey bridge to connect the landslide-hit areas, where several people are believed to be stranded, alongside the deployment of sniffer dogs and over 1,000 rescuers from Central and state emergency response teams conducting massive search operations, constitutes one of the largest rescue efforts in Wayanad.

Massive landslides triggered by torrential rains hit Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha hamlets in the early hours of Tuesday, killing several people, including women and children.

No estimate of exact number of missing people yet

As a massive search operation is underway at Mundakkai region in landslide-hit Wayanad with a team of over 3,000 rescue workers, the authorities and locals are still grappling to determine the exact number of people missing.

According to the state government, an estimated 191 people are missing, though official sources indicate that the actual number may be much higher.

The rescue operators are contending with adverse conditions, including muddy soil and rain, as they search through destroyed homes and buildings.

State Revenue Minister K Rajan, who is in the disaster-struck region, coordinating the rescue efforts, told the media that the authorities are yet to finalise the number of missing people.

“Initially, we used the voter list to identify the missing persons. But since it does not contain the details of the children, we are now relying on ration cards and other details. We are trying to identify the missing people by checking the ration card details and with the help of Asha workers and the anganwadi workers,” Rajan said.

He said the rescue mission at Mundakkai is a massive one, as usually an incident like this will be limited to one or two kilometres, but in this case, the disaster has struck a massive area.

“Bodies were recovered from the Chaliyar river at Pothukal (in Malappuram district). That shows the huge impact of this incident,” Rajan said.

On Wednesday, the DYFI workers scouted the nearby forest areas and recovered over 30 bodies.

The Pothukal area of Chaliyar River is around 8 km from Mundakkai.

Even as the rescue operations are progressing, there are no exact details of the number of workers from the nearby tea estate, which was also an affected area.

Sources from Mundakkai said there were migrant workers staying at the quarters of the tea estate, which was swept away.

“We are not sure whether they had shifted to some safer place or they were hit by the landslide,” a local told the media.

Information regarding the migrant workers is not available, as the tea estate manager is also missing, the residents said.

On Thursday morning, rescue workers managed to reach Chooralmala where a trail of destruction could be seen, with massive boulders scattered everywhere and numerous houses buried or swept away.

Villagers said that the whole landscape has changed.

A mother's selfless offer of help

Amid the harrowing reports of death and destruction from the landslides-hit Wayanad district, a heartwarming story emerges from Idukki, where a mother of two selflessly offers her breast milk to infants who have lost their mothers in the disaster that has claimed 173 lives.

The woman, her husband and two children, aged 4 years and four months, have already left for Wayand from their home in Idukki in central Kerala.

Speaking to media, the woman said, “I am a mother of two small children. I know how it must be for children without their mothers. That is what prompted me to take this decision.” She said that when she discussed it with her husband, he was very supportive of it.

Her husband said that when they heard news about children who have lost one or both of their parents, they wanted to help out. “Therefore, we took this decision,” he said.

Declare it as “calamity of severe nature” under MPLADS guidelines: Tharoor to Shah

Congress’s Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has urged Home Minister Amit Shah to declare the Wayanad landslides as a “calamity of severe nature” under the MPLADS guidelines to facilitate urgent assistance from MPs to the affected areas.

In a letter to Shah, Tharoor said, “…I am writing to you to declare this event a ‘Calamity of Severe Nature’ in terms of Paragraph 8.1 of the MPLADS Guidelines which would allow Members of Parliament to recommend works up to Rs 1 crore from their MPLADS funds, for the affected districts/ areas.”

The willing Members of Parliament would then be able to generously contribute funds for relief and rehabilitation works in the areas affected by this tragedy, he said. This will surely be invaluable in supporting the painstaking efforts for rescue, relief and rehabilitation, he said.

The Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) enables MPs to suggest and get executed developmental works of a capital nature based on locally felt needs.
