INDIA bloc MPs march to Lok Sabha together, raising slogans to "save Constitution"; election to post of Lok Sabha Speaker slated for Wednesday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of his Council of Ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, took the oath as members of the 18th Lok Sabha as its first session began on Monday, June 24.
While he was taking the oath, Opposition members rose to their feet, holding copies of the Constitution. When Shah came to take the oath, they again held up the copies of the Constitution but remained seated.
Among the Council of Ministers, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are members of the Rajya Sabha, while ministers of state George Kurian and Ravneet Singh are not members of either House.
The election to the post of Lok Sabha Speaker will take place on Wednesday (June 26) and the Prime Minister will introduce his Council of Ministers to the House soon after.
President's address
Early in the morning, President Droupadi Murmu made an address to joint sitting of both the Houses on June 27.
She administered the oath to BJP leader and seven-term member Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
There was ruckus outside the new Parliament House as the Opposition INDIA bloc MPs gathered for a show of strength. They marched to the Lok Sabha together, raising slogans to "save Constitution". They were holding copies of the Constitution's pocketbook edition.
Modi makes speech
Modi said people have given his government mandate for a third consecutive term and have put a stamp of approval on its policies and intentions.
He also said that the 18th Lok Sabha begins on Monday with a resolve of building a 'Shreshtha Bharat' and 'Viksit Bharat'. He asserted that his government will take everyone along in fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
Modi also noted that Emergency's 50th anniversary falls on June 25, and described it as a "black spot" on India's democracy when Constitution was discarded.
