Various parts of Tamil Nadu witness thunderstorms; Chennai sees spectacular lightning before midnight, which residents describe as both stunning and scary


Chennai saw heavy rains on Monday night (October 14-15), with spectacular lightning illuminating the night sky.

The city recorded 4.6 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours till 6 am on October 15.

Various parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed thunderstorms. Chennai saw spectacular lightning before midnight, which residents described as both stunning and scary.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts in the next 24 hours.

The Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) Integrated Command and Control Centre said Vadapalani received the highest rainfall of 6.2 cm, followed by Nungambakkam with 6.1 cm and Meenambakkam with 5.8 cm. The Ice House area also received 5.3 cm, and Velachery received 5.5 cm.

Stalin takes stock

Last night, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took stock of the preparations and steps taken by authorities to tackle the situation that may arise in view of the heavy rain predicted by met office in the next four days.

He has directed the authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15, and also asked them to issue an advisory to IT firms to allow their employees to work from home from October 15 to 18.

The RMC said Tamil Nadu would receive heavy rain due to a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am today. "It is likely to become a well marked low pressure area and move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next two days," it said.

    Udhayanidhi tweets about govt measures

    Tamil Nadu DyCM Udhayanidhi Stalin updated people about the measures taken by the government in a series of posts on X.

    "In the context of heavy rains across Chennai city, we conducted a survey in our #ChepaukTriplicane block, GP road area a while ago. Municipal employees are working in full swing on GP Road, which is usually identified as one of the water-logged areas. We met them in person and cheered them on with refreshments. Also, we visited the places where rainwater drains have been installed and advised the authorities to prevent water stagnation."

    "In Chennai due to widespread rain due to #NEMonsoon, we personally examined the way rain water drains through the drains set up in our #ChepaukTriplicane block, Rayapetta Jani John Khan Road and surrounding areas. Also, we gave milk and snacks to the sanitation workers who are volunteering for the people even in the middle of the night in the pouring rain and appreciated them. We advised the authorities to properly monitor the rainfall and take measures to avoid any harm to the people." 

    "As heavy rains are falling in various parts of Chennai, as per the directions of Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu @mkstalin, we conducted a survey on the banks of Narayanapuram lake between Pallikaranai and Kovilambakkam some time ago. We examined the manner in which the banks of the Narayanapuram lake have been strengthened, and inquired from the officials about the manner in which the channels leading to the rainwater lake have been dug, the nature of the banks, etc. We examined the canal from Ambedkar Road which brings the surplus water from Kilikattalai Lake to Narayanapuram Lake. Also, we met the public in the area and got their demands and opinions. We advised the government officials to take appropriate action against them."

    "Due to heavy rains, we are conducting surveys at various places in Chennai as per the directions of Hon'ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister @mkstalin. As a part of this, we inspected the works being carried out on Maylai Musiri Subramaniam Road, Block #ChepaukTriplicane to prevent rain water from stagnating with the Corporation officials. Also, we personally met the workers engaged in heavy rain prevention work and gave them refreshments. We have requested them to remove the rainwater quickly so that there is no disruption to the work going on there."

    Low pressure area likely to intensify into a depression: IMD

    Overnight rains lashed Chennai and nearby areas and the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday (October 15) said the low pressure area is likely to turn well marked soon.

    While civic authorities said there has been no water stagnation in subways in view of preventive maintenance, water logging was seen in several places inconveniencing road users.

    Since Monday night, Chennai and its suburbs, including those falling under nearby Tiruvallur district has been experiencing intermittent rains.

    The IMD said in a post on 'X' said: "The low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal persisted over the same region at 23.30 hours IST of yesterday, the 14th October 2024. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become a well marked low pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal by morning of today, the 15th October.

    "Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a depression and continue to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during subsequent 2 days".
