US: Beloved pet squirrel and Internet star Peanut euthanised; here’s why

Much-loved Internet star Peanut the squirrel has been euthanised by NYC authorities after a bite incident, leaving the owner heartbroken and fans in mourning

A black squirrel named Peanut, who captured hearts worldwide as an Internet star, has been euthanised by New York authorities following an incident in which the squirrel bit a government official. Peanut, known for his endearing online antics such as nibbling waffles and posing in tiny costumes, had amassed a following of 537,000 fans on Instagram.

Mark Longo, a citizen of New York, had rescued Peanut as a baby after witnessing his mother struck by a car. Despite an attempt to release him back into the wild, Peanut, having lost part of his tail, returned and lived with Longo for seven years. The two formed an inseparable bond, with Peanut starring on the Instagram page @peanut_the_squirrel12.

Illegal pets

Following Peanut’s euthanasia, Longo took to social media, expressing his heartbreak: "Internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me... there's a special place in hell for you."

Authorities explained their decision, pointing out that both Peanut and a raccoon living with Longo had been kept illegally.

NYC authorities clarify

The Chemung County Department of Health and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued a statement confirming the euthanasia was necessary to test for rabies after the squirrel bit a staff member during the investigation. The DEC advised that anyone exposed to these animals should consult a medical professional.

Longo, devastated by the loss, announced plans to fight on. He requested followers to support his campaign for an animal sanctuary and legal aid in his ongoing battle.
