What are Iran’s 7 conditions for the US to resume peace talks?

Iran has conveyed a set of conditions to the US for ending the ongoing conflict and resuming peace talks, with the demands sent through Qatari mediators, according to Iranian officials.

Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei told Al Jazeera that Tehran wants an immediate end to the war on all fronts, including hostilities in Lebanon.

Iran’s conditions

Iran has demanded an end to the US naval blockade of its southern ports and the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds held abroad.

Tehran has called for a complete halt to US military attacks and assassinations on Iranian territory. It also wants the US to stop interfering in Iran’s internal affairs and end its support for what Iranian officials call “opponents of the revolution”.

Seven conditions of Iran

• An immediate end to the war on all fronts, explicitly highlighting the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and Yemen.
• The complete lifting of the US naval blockade currently enforced against southern Iranian ports.
• The release of all frozen Iranian funds, which amount to billions of US dollars worldwide.
• A total halt to all US military attacks and assassinations on Iranian sovereign territory.
• An end to all US interference in Iran's internal affairs.
• An end to US cooperation and backing of "opponents of the revolution"
• Opening of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has also tied the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to the fulfilment of these demands.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the waterway would remain closed until the US meets its commitments and recognises what Tehran calls the “legitimate rights” of the Iranian people.

Rezaei said Iran was ready for a “decisive war” if the US rejected the conditions, while also saying Tehran remained open to negotiations.

Mostly earlier demands

Most of these demands are similar to what Iran had sought under the June memorandum of understanding between the two sides.

That agreement also called for an end to the war, respect for sovereignty, an end to interference in internal affairs, lifting of the naval blockade and release of Iran’s frozen funds. The previous understanding also covered Iran’s nuclear programme, US sanctions, Iranian oil exports and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for shipping.

The latest demands come after that understanding expired, with tensions continuing around the Strait.

US response

The US has not publicly responded to Iran’s latest conditions. Washington has, however, warned its citizens in several countries in the region to exercise “heightened vigilance”, saying the security situation remains complex and could escalate unexpectedly.
