Vir Das gets stopped at Bengaluru airport for his 'pointed' Emmy trophy. Know more

Vir Das wrote a tongue-in-cheek post on his interaction with a Hindi speaking airport security officer at Bengaluru airport. His post went viral

There are truly ‘Two Indias’ in the country, as celebrated comedian Vir Das had once observed. (Of course, much to his peril).

There is one India, in which Indians rejoiced and thrilled over Das winning the coveted Emmy award for his Netflix show and he even got acknowledged in the Amul ad as "Our Emmynent comedian". But, in another India, there are people who are clueless about the debonair, quick-witted Vir Das, who makes people laugh for a living. And this was in display at Bengaluru airport.

On Saturday (November 25), Das posted an interaction he had with a security check staff at Bengaluru airport on X. The post which was narrated in his typical tongue-in-cheek style went viral and bagged nearly 1.5 million views.

Apparently, the airport officer, speaking in Hindi, had a problem with the “pointed” idol like object nestling inside Das' bag and questioned him about it. Das clarified that it is not an idol but an award. To which the officer asked him if it was “sharply pointed”?

Das replied that it is not sharp but just the “wings” in the award. The officer asked him to open the bag and show him the award and subsequently was satisfied that it did not pose a security threat.

Oblivious to his identity, he then went on to ask Das what he did for a living. The comedian, not one to miss an opportunity ostensibly replied patly, "Comedian sir. Joke sunata hu". (Comedian sir, I tell jokes)

To which, the surprised officer is supposed to have said: Joke ke liye puruskar milte hain? (Do you get an award for a telling jokes?) Das replied, "Mujhko bhi ajeeb laga sir". (I also find it strange, sir). They both laughed and Das tucked the award back in the bag and headed to his flight.

Here's the post:

Sharp wits

The comments he got for this post which went viral were equally entertaining. While one user said, "I do wonder how they allow you to board with your sharp wits". Another user said that the officer had a ”point” though.

One user pertinently observed, "Isn't it funny how getting an award for spreading happiness & smile sounds surprising..".

Many loved his funny take on a casual interaction. One however said, "Thanks, was scared you would make fun of non-English speaking Indians again as the "other India"

Earlier, Das had dedicated the prestigious Emmy award to the country and the art of comedy. He wrote on Instagram, “For India. For Indian comedy. Every breath, every word. Thank you to the @iemmys for this incredible honour.

Das, who acted in films such as Go Goa Gone and Delhi Belly, won the award for Vir Das: Landing, a show about what it means to be truly global while looking for a home.
