Veteran Tamil filmmaker-actor K Bhagyaraj dies at 73

Bhagyaraj suffered cardiac arrest; reports say he was in Goa to attend the wedding of actor-politician Khushbu Sundar's daughter


Veteran filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday (June 27) at the age of 73 after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest, sending shockwaves across the Tamil film industry.

Bhagyaraj had remained active in public life until recently. Just days before his death, he attended the wedding of actor-politician Khushbu Sundar's daughter in Goa, reported India Today.

A towering film career

Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu's Erode district, he entered the film industry as an assistant to acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja. He later emerged as one of Tamil cinema's most influential creative forces, excelling as an actor, director, producer, screenwriter and music composer.

He made his debut as a lead actor in ‘Puthiya Vaarpugal’, directed by Bharathiraja, before establishing himself as a filmmaker with a distinctive storytelling style.

Known for his innovative screenplay techniques and naturalistic approach to filmmaking, Bhagyaraj earned widespread acclaim as one of Indian cinema's finest screenwriters. His films, many of which struck a chord with family and women audiences, continue to enjoy enduring popularity and remain favourites among generations of moviegoers.

Later years in cinema

His last directorial venture was ‘Sithu Plus Two’, released in 2012 and starring his son, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj. In the years that followed, he focused largely on acting and shared screen space with several leading Tamil stars, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Vijayakanth.

Bhagyaraj's death comes just 17 days after the passing of his mentor, Bharathiraja, on June 10. The loss of the mentor and his celebrated protégé within such a short span has cast a pall of grief over the Tamil film industry, with tributes expected to pour in from colleagues, admirers and fans.

Legacy lives on

He is survived by his wife, former actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj. Bhagyaraj leaves behind a cinematic legacy that continues to influence filmmakers and entertain audiences across generations.
