For Tamil cinema fans who have followed the journey of the Gautam Menon's spy thriller, Dhruva Natchathiram since its first teaser set the internet on fire back in 2017 and 2018, rumours of its release are nothing new.

The film has been announced, promised, and pulled back before a release date more times than most people can count. However, a new court order has given the film another fresh lease of life.

Madras high court steps in

A division bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Justices P Velmurugan and K Govindarajan Thilakavadi, dismissed appeals filed by creditors Prem Kumar and Punniyamoorthy, who had challenged an earlier order permitting the film's release.

That earlier order, passed in April 2026, had cleared the film for release by June 15 and directed the opening of a dedicated bank account in the name of the production house, Kondaduvom Entertainment, to handle all financial transactions required for the release.

However, the makers could not meet the June 15 deadline, and Menon subsequently approached the court seeking an extension until July 15. That petition is scheduled to be heard on June 17, when the court will decide whether to grant the additional time.

Skepticism prevails

However, due to the long history of frequently disappointing fans, the latest development has only raised skepticism as many believe that the film may not see the light of the day.

The film's origins go back even further than the start of its production in 2017.

Dhruva Natchathiram was first discussed with Suriya in 2013, with Menon hoping to turn it into a franchise. The collaboration didn't survive, with Menon later admitting he felt Suriya should never have hesitated.

The project was revived in 2015 with Vikram in the lead, and production formally began in 2017. The film was shot in seven countries but languished in production hell for years, concluding only in February 2023.

After an estimated budget of ₹80 crore was spent, multiple shooting schedules held across nearly a decade, and a completed edit sitting in the can and no release in sight, has been the fate of this film.

The closest the film got to a release date was in 2023. The makers announced November 24, 2023 as the film’s release date.

However, the film collapsed at the last minute after two cases were slapped against the makers.

At that time, director Gautham Vasudev Menon took to X to post an apology, writing, "Sorry. Unable to get Dhruva Natchathiram to the screens today. We tried our best. But it looks like we need a day or two more."

Those days have stretched into years. Now, a court order is reviving the hopes of fans once again.

In Menon's own words

Menon has been unusually candid about the ordeal. He acknowledged that when he approached studios for support, they checked with their sources and were told the film had too many issues, leading to it being repeatedly rescheduled.

He noted that whenever the release got pushed, nobody from the industry came forward to talk to him about it.

Despite the isolation, he remained confident: "It will come out… It will make a difference," he said. In an earlier interview with Film Companion, he spoke about what the film meant to him personally.

"It's something that I am holding on to," he said, describing Dhruva Natchathiram as a film he created and one that belonged to him .

What the film is about

Dhruva Natchathiram, subtitled Chapter One: Yuddha Kaandam, is a Tamil-language spy action thriller.

It is set in the same shared universe as Menon's 2024 film Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha, and follows a covert operative who leads an elite team called "The Basement," working to neutralise terrorist organisations, outside the bounds of law and order.

The film stars Vikram in the lead, alongside Simran, Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, R Parthiban, Radhika Sarathkumar, and Vinayakan. The music is composed by Harris Jayaraj, with cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa, SR Kathir, and Vishnu Dev, and editing by Anthony.

Will it see light of the day?

The financial problems of Dhruva Natachathiram have impacted other films as well since the parties involved in the financial issues are also entangled in Gautham’s other projects like Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta.

With the new court order, things might finally work out for the film, but till it hits the screen, the cloud of uncertainty will continue to loom over Dhruva Natchathiram.
