Congress leader, Vir Das support Deepika against trollers on 'open relationship' comments

Supriya Shrinate told trollers that instead of applauding Deepika's courage for speaking on mental health issues, she has become the subject of vicious trolling, character assassination and vulgar memes

Trollers love to target Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone. From the time she visited Jawarharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi in 2020 to stand by the students protesting against violence, the actor has turned into a troller's delight.

Most recently, Deepika is currently being attacked online for her comments on being in an open relationship, while dating Ranveer in their early days. And, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, comedian Vir Das, Karan Johar and others have come to her support and slammed the trollers.
Dating days
In the latest 'Koffee With Karan' Season 8 episode, Deepika who appeared on the show with her husband Ranveer Singh, was talking about the time they had first dated. At that time, she wasn't committed to Ranveer and said she was also meeting other men as well at that time.
Clad in a black dress, Deepika confessed that when Ranveer had come into her life, she had wanted to be single for a while because she had gone through some difficult relationships. She said, "I was going through a phase where I said I just don't want to be attached, don't want to be committed".
And then Ranveer came along but she did not commit to him until he proposed to her. "There was no 'commitment as such. Even if we were technically allowed to see other people, we would just keep coming back to each other," Padukone had said.
Besides talking about her dating days before her marriage, in the show, which also featured clips from her wedding in Lake Como in Italy, she also talked candidly about battling depression and how Ranveer stood by her during that time.
Deepika shamed
Subsequently, Deepika has been facing a volley of insults on social media. Social media users shamed her for having "no morals" and calling out her "infidelity, which is disguised as mental health challenges". "Preaching infidelity is the new woman empowerment," said one user.
However, Vir Das came to her support mocking Indian men, when he posted, " Moment of silence for all the men who are upset that a Bollywood star way out of their league was casually dating for a while, and wasn’t as committed as their imaginary girlfriend is to them."
Another user said it was sickening to see people "slut-shame" Deepika Padukone for something as basic as “not being mentally prepared for a long-term relationship immediately after heartbreak”.
They were both not in a committed relationship while they were seeing other people and none deserves shaming, said the user.
Congress spokesperson hits out at trollers
Surprisingly, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate too stepped in to back Deepika. In a long post, she praised Deepika as this young woman, "who is a super achiever" who talks about her struggles with mental health and how she actually emboldens many more to deal with this "unspoken demon". And, lauded Ranveer for standing by her when she went through the trauma.
"Instead of applauding their courage to speak about issues that we brush under the carpet as a society - they, especially the woman has become the subject of vicious trolling, character assassination and vulgar memes," she pointed out.
Then Shrinate went on to ask why can’t people handle reality and why raw human emotions make people uncomfortable. Further, she questioned why does everything have to be "candy flossed, why have people become this bitter, so full of hate, so inhumane and so judgemental?"
She started her post asking what have we all become?
Hate peddlers
Shrinate went on to add that the truth is that the hate which is peddled, makes no difference to people it’s directed towards. "Because hate and abuse comes from anonymous, insignificant people unhappy and angry with their own lives and anxiety. These same petty trolls will be the first to hound her for a selfie were they ever to cross paths - these folks actually need affection and I pray they find love too!", she said.
But, Shrinate also got trolled as users lashed out at her for wasting her time on a Bollywood couple and watching "silly Karan Johar show".
"Yes we can understand your love for this sweet couple...after all she came and supported the Tukde Tukde gang at JNU...who paid her the money to give an anti national speech at JNU??" said one user. While another asked her, "Even a main spokesperson of top political party has so much time to analyse such things?"

Trolling lands nowhere

Meanwhile, Karan Johar too lambasted trollers for targetting Deepika saying trolling gets you nowhere and that they were "landing nowhere".
"You're filling and brimming your heart with negativity but landing nowhere because what's gonna happen will happen to the people you're trolling. If they're gonna meet the success, they will. If they're gonna fail, they will. It has nothing to do with you," Johar said during an Instagram live.
