Coldplay fans go crazy over Mumbai event, third show added after ticket ruckus
As fans expressed disappointment over long virtual queues on BookMyShow, Coldplay quickly added a third show citing “phenomenal demand”
Coldplay fans are simply going crazy over the British rock band’s upcoming Mumbai tour early next year — its first visit to India in eight years.
As tickets flew off the virtual shelves of BookMyShow like hot cakes, many started booking rooms in the hotel adjoining DIY Patil Stadium in a desperate attempt to catch a glimpse of their stars, finally prompting the band to add a third show to the Mumbai leg of its Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025.
According to the BookMyShow website, all three shows are sold out.
Chaos over tickets
Coldplay had already announced two shows on January 18 and 19, 2025, at the DY Patil Sports Stadium.
According to BookMyShow, the sale of tickets for the two shows was supposed to open at 12 noon. Many said the tickets remained unavailable for booking well over 12.15 pm on Sunday.
According to reports, the server of BookMyShow website as well as app crashed as it opened the sale. Soon, hashtags “Coldplay”, “BookMyShow”, and “Crashed” started trending on X.
Several fans shared screenshots of their frozen computer screens and smartphones with the app experiencing a lot of traffic.
Third show added
As fans expressed disappointment over long virtual queues on BookMyShow, Coldplay quickly added a third show citing “phenomenal demand”.
“Due to phenomenal demand, a third Mumbai date has been added at DY Patil Stadium for 21 January, 2025. Tickets on sale at 2PM IST today,” Coldplay said in an X post, alongside the booking link.
1.3 crore fans log in for tickets
According to a BookMyShow spokesperson, 1.3 crore fans logged in on Sunday to buy tickets.
“At BookMyShow and BookMyShow Live, we’ve worked hard to ensure every fan had a fair chance to secure tickets, providing clear, step-by-step booking guides and maintaining transparent communication through all our official channels,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“We implemented a queueing system to manage the overwhelming demand and addressed issues caused by suspicious and malicious traffic within minutes, causing a brief delay, but ensuring minimal disruption for genuine fans. Due to the unprecedented demand, a third Mumbai show was added shortly thereafter, which also received a fantastic response,” the spokesperson added.
Wait list of 842,745!
“To those who got tickets, congratulations! For those who missed out, we understand your disappointment and are committed to bringing memorable entertainment experiences your way,” the spokesperson further said.
The ticket prices range from Rs 2,500 to Rs 12,500, with Rs 35000 for lounge area, according to the platform’s website.
In less than an hour, the server got back up and BookMyShow shared a message of facing “heavy traffic” on every account trying to book a ticket, with the wait list going as high as 842,745 (data on BookMyShow website as per 1.39 pm).
“Because of heavy traffic, queue is moving slower than expected. Thank you for your patience!” read a message on the platform.
Fake tickets
A fan claimed other platforms were selling Coldplay tickets at inflated prices.
‘Dear @coldplay, fans in India are struggling to get tickets on @Bookmyshow_live with waitlists over 300k, but platforms like Viagogo (search coldplay india tickets on google, first sponsored link will be VIAGOGO)are selling them at inflated prices. #coldplayindia #BookMyShow (sic),” posted a user.
Soon, BookMyShow warned fans about unauthorised platforms selling fake tickets for the Coldplay India tour. “These tickets are invalid…. Please don't fall prey to this because you will be buying fake tickets. Avoid scams! BookMyShow is the only official platform for ticket sales,” the platform posted.
Last resort: Hotel rooms
As many fans missed out on tickets, they looked for rooms in the hotels next to DIY Patil Stadium.
According to MoneyControl, The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel is fully booked on those dates, possibly because some of its rooms offer a clear view of the stadium.
The Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 will commence on October 30 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, and will conclude on August 31, 2025, with a show at the Wembley Stadium in London, the UK.
The Grammy-winning band previously performed in Mumbai as part of the Global Citizen Festival back in 2016.
