'Hugging in Delhi, begging in Kerala': Smriti Irani hits out at Congress, Left leaders

While LDF is asking Rahul Gandhi to contest from UP, the same Left leaders are seen hugging him during the INDIA bloc meeting

Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on Friday (April 5) took a sharp dig at both the Congress and the Left, which are INDIA bloc partners, for being at each other’s throats in Wayanad.

Speaking at an interactive session with businessmen in Bengaluru, the BJP MP from Amethi said, “On one hand the CPI(M)-led LDF is asking Rahul Gandhi to contest from Uttar Pradesh, and on the other, the same Left leaders were seen hugging him during the INDIA bloc meeting.”

"The condition of the Opposition is that they are fighting in Wayanad. Left parties are asking Why doesn’t Rahul Gandhi go to Uttar Pradesh and contest. But when the same Left goes to Delhi for an INDI Alliance meeting, they hug Rahul Gandhi," ANI quoted her as saying.

The LDF has fielded Annie Raja from Wayanad, the Lok Sabha constituency from where Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election.

"Yesterday, I said in Kerala, 'Delhi mein hugging, Kerala mein begging.' The situation through which the Congress is going in Karnataka is, 'Delhi mein hugging, Kerala mein begging, Karnataka mein thugging," the Union minister said.

Roughly translated, while both the Congress and the Left hugged each other in Delhi, they are begging in Kerala and in Karnataka they are ruling like thugs.

Voting not like TV soap

She exhorted women to act responsibly while casting their vote in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

"I request all the women that if we want everyone to take women seriously in politics, then we have to pay attention to important political issues. 'Saas-Bahu' serials are very far from the realities of life. Women who understand this can have a successful social and political life. Casting your vote is a heavy responsibility, it is not a game of any TV serial," the TV actress-turned-politician was quoted as saying.
