BJP expels Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh for contesting against NDA candidate

Pawan has filed his nomination as an independent candidate from the Karakat Lok Sabha seat in his home state of Bihar

The BJP has expelled the Bhojpuri singer-actor Pawan Singh from the party for contesting against the NDA candidate in the Karakat Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. Pawan has filed his nomination as an independent candidate.

In a story of twists and turns, the Bhojpuri performer was originally nominated by the BJP on March 2 to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Asansol seat in West Bengal. However, the day after the announcement by the party, he expressed his inability to contest from Asansol “due to some reason”.

He made this decision most probably due to the severe backlash from opposition parties in West Bengal to his candidature from the state. They said his songs were extremely crude and depicted women, especially Bengali women, in a vulgar way.

About 10 days later, Pawan announced he would fight the polls in order to honour the promise he had made to his mother, but without mentioning from which constituency or the party he would represent.

“I will fight the elections to fulfill the promise I made to my mother, my society, and the people,” he posted on X. “I seek blessings and cooperation from everyone.”

On May 9, the singer-actor filed his nomination for the Karakat Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate. His supporters thronged the area around the Rohtas Collectorate in a show of strength.

Pawan Singh will be up against Upendra Kushwaha of the NDA, INDIA’s Rajaram Singh, and AIMIM’s Priyanka Chaudhary, making it a four-cornered contest.

The elections in Karakat constituency will be held in the final phase on June 1.
