Explained: Know how Swiggy Instamart can now build your shopping cart in a jiffy
A new feature enables users to easily scan, write, or say their entire shopping list and build a cart automatically for a hassle-free shopping experience
Proving that the adage ‘customer is king’ isn’t just a marketing slogan, food delivery and quick commerce company Swiggy has walked the talk by rolling out a new feature in response to a viral social media post that requested quick commerce companies to add a feature that could create a cart based on a customer’s shopping list.
What’s the new feature?
Swiggy's new feature enables users to easily scan, write, or say their entire shopping list and build a cart automatically for a hassle-free shopping experience, the company said in a press release on Sunday (October 27).

This means, users will no longer have to spend precious time physically searching for each item on their shopping list to build a cart. The new feature in the app will do it for them.
Why the new feature?
People who order food, groceries, and other items online are usually those who do it not just for the convenience but also because they are pressed for time. Swiggy Instamart caters to many such customers.

For those who have a long shopping list, completing the task, even online, is cumbersome and time-consuming.
Hence, the new “shopping list” feature by Swiggy Instamart.
How to use the new feature?
Users will have the capability to create their shopping cart using a shopping list.
The app has three convenient options:
‘Say it’: With this feature, users can simply vocalise their lists – like saying, ‘Apple, Mango, and Banana’ – and the system will automatically generate a searchable list that can be added to their cart in one go.
‘Scan it’: If customers already have a prepared shopping list, they just have to scan it on the app, and hey presto, the cart will be ready.
‘Write it’: The third option is to type the shopping list on the app, and it will prepare the cart for you.

The X post that started it
The company came up with the new feature in response to a post by a user Gabbar Singh on X.
“Guys at @letsblinkit @Swiggy @ZeptoNow. Please listen. Indian(s) shop via shopping lists. They go to a shop, give the list to the shopkeeper, he gets everything, it’s very difficult to search, pick the quantity & add to cart items one by one on your platforms. Please give a functionality to upload a list. And it makes the cart for me. Thanks,” the user had said in his post.
Gabbar’s bio on X says he is the co-founder of @JoinHoodApp, Founder @GingerMonkeyIN, Columnist, HT.
The post went viral and garnered 7,00,000 views.
Response from Swiggy’s co-founder
“Well, we heard you @GabbarSingh,” posted Phani Kishan, co-founder of Swiggy, on X. “The feature is in pilot phase and we will be scaling it up to all the users gradually. Here’s a small demo of your shopping list @SwiggyInstamart.”
Insanely cool: Gabbar Singh
“Swiggy Co-founder replies saying they already have this in the product pipeline. But the cute thing was actually taking my own list and feeding it to their engine, to show how shopping can be done by just uploading a list. Insanely cool (smiley emoji). Showed it to wife, she was a bit taken aback. (laughter emoji). And they didn’t pay for any of this. They don’t need to,” Gabbar Singh posted on X after the response from Swiggy co-founder Phani Kishan.
Here's to happy shopping during this festive season.
