The rebound is seen as highlighting the commercial opportunity for Indian crypto exchanges to deepen engagement.

Crypto exchange WazirX says active traders have doubled after restart

Recovery presents more complex test than bringing traders back: WazirX must sustain engagement while continuing to address financial consequences of breach

WazirX has reported a sharp recovery in trading activity a year after resuming operations following a restructuring, with active traders more than doubling between July and September and monthly futures trading volumes rising 243% over the same period.

According to the company, the figures point to renewed customer participation at the Indian cryptocurrency exchange, which restarted operations in October 2025 after a prolonged suspension following a $234.9 million cyberattack in July 2024.

The recovery, however, presents a more complex test than simply bringing traders back: WazirX must sustain engagement while continuing to address the financial consequences of the breach.

Returning users drive trading recovery

According to WazirX, 95% of trading activity since the restart has come from returning users. Average monthly trades per active trader also increased by nearly 100% between November 2025 and September 2026, while monthly spot trading volumes rose approximately 124% between June and September.

Futures trading has emerged as a significant growth driver. Since its public launch on May 13, monthly futures volumes have increased 62-fold, WazirX said. Between July and September, volumes climbed approximately 243%, reflecting the expansion of the product and the addition of new markets and trading features.

The rebound highlights the commercial opportunity for Indian crypto exchanges to deepen engagement through lower trading costs, new products and improved customer services. It also illustrates how quickly trading activity can grow when an established user base returns to an operational platform.

For India's digital-asset industry, however, higher volumes are not synonymous with restored confidence. WazirX said eligible customers received approximately 85% of their approved claims following the restart, with Recovery Tokens distributed in January 2026 to represent entitlements to potential additional recoveries under its court-approved Scheme of Arrangement.

Those tokens are intended to facilitate further recoveries as assets are recovered and profits become available, subject to the scheme's terms. The distinction matters: the distribution of recovery entitlements does not itself guarantee that customers will receive additional funds.

The episode also underscores the importance of custody arrangements, cybersecurity and transparent communication for exchanges operating in a market where investors face significant financial and regulatory risks. WazirX says it uses BitGo for digital-asset custody and has integrated Fireblocks technology into its security architecture.

Growth must translate into durable trust

The exchange reported an 88% increase in individual deposits, while the number of customers making deposits rose 78.9% between November 2025 and September 2026. Its internal customer satisfaction metric has also exceeded 90%, it said.

“Restarting operations was an important first step, but rebuilding trust and improving the customer experience is an ongoing process,” WazirX founder Nischal Shetty said.
