Tamil Nadu reported 4,150 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday (July 5), breaching the 4,000-mark for the fourth consecutive day, and taking the total count to 1,11,151, said the state government in its daily bulletin.

Besides, 60 related deaths were also reported from across the state and the total fatalities due to the virus now stands at 1,510. Currently, there are 46,860 active cases. The state also witnessed the discharge of 2,186 patients following treatment on Sunday, taking the recovery count to 62,778, the bulletin said.

Of the 4,150 fresh cases, state capital Chennai accounted for 1,713 infections, and Madurai 308, besides other districts. The city also accounted for 21 of the new deaths.

Among those who tested positive on Sunday was an AIADMK MLA from Coimbatore; he is the fifth ruling party MLA to contract the virus. He has been admitted to the Government ESI Hospital in the city, a health department official said.

An intense lockdown, without any relaxations, was in place across the state on Sunday as part of the government’s efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus, with all roads remaining deserted and shops downing shutters.

The state government had earlier announced that on all the four Sundays in July, intense lockdown will be in force across Tamil Nadu. Only healthcare services, including pharmacies and hospitals, will be functional on these Sundays.
