COVID-19: Highest single-day spike in TN as state crosses 60,000-mark
Even as the capital Chennai and its neighbouring districts that have the maximum number of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu are under lockdown, the number of infections in the state has increased to 62,087 after 2,710 new cases were reported on Monday (June 22).
According to the state health department’s bulletin, the state currently has 27,178 active cases, while 34,112 people have been cured or discharged from hospitals. Tamil Nadu also witnessed 37 deaths due to the disease on Monday, raising the toll to 794.
In the capital Chennai, 1,487 new cases were reported. The district has seen a total of 42,752 cases so far. It is followed by Chengapattu and Tiruvallur that reported 126 and 120 cases respectively on Monday. Madurai and Tiruvannamalai districts have also witnessed a spike with 153 and 130 cases respectively.

Out of 2,710 people who tested positive for the virus on Monday, 58 had returned from other states or countries. While three people had returned from Singapore, two had come from Nigeria and one from Qatar.
Patients had also returned from Karnataka (11), Delhi (10), Kerala (9), Maharashtra (9), Gujarat (4), Andhra Pradesh (3), Jammu & Kashmir (2), Rajasthan (2), Uttar Pradesh (1) and Telangana (1) by flights, trains or road. The state tested 26,592 samples on Monday and has so far tested 9,19,204 samples.
