On getting elected MP of Kanyakumari, Congress leader and MLA of Nanguneri constituency H Vasanthakumar met Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker P Dhanapal and submitted his resignation at the secretariat in Chennai on Wednesday.

This is in line with the rule that anyone getting elected while being a member of either the legislative Assembly or Parliament should give up one position within six days.

With his departure from the state Assembly, the Nanguneri Assembly is scheduled to face bypolls. Asked whether the Congress would put up its own candidate in the ensuing by elections, Vasanth Kumar said that his party would prevail on the DMK to support its nominee.

With the Lok Sabha seat for Vellore too remaining vacant, there is every likelihood that the bypolls to both the seats would be held simultaneously.
