The civic body in Bengaluru has banned all protests outside the Sir Puttana Chetty Town Hall citing dip in bookings and traffic congestion. The area outside the Town Hall has been the venue of several pro and anti-CAA protests over the last few months.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council passed a resolution at its meeting on Saturday (February 29) banning all such activities outside the Town Hall, sources said.
Opposition parties protested against the resolution, noting that the subject was not even part of the agenda, reports suggest.

Mayor Gautham Kumar defended the move, saying protests in front of the Town Hall had led to a dip in bookings by event organisers, affecting BBMP’s revenue and was also causing traffic congestion in the area.
BBMP has also communicated its decision to the city police chief and said protesters can stage demonstrations at the Freedom Park and Mourya Circle.
The Opposition has termed the resolution as “undemocratic” and said it was done to restrict anti-CAA protests. They also threatened to stage protests in front of Town Hall itself to revoke it.
