After a few years, a teacher in a school in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh will call “Corona”, while recording attendance. The reply will be “present sir”. In another school in Deoria district, another teacher will call “Lockdown”. Again, the reply will be “present sir”.
Corona and lockdown have currently gripped the country — in fact, the whole world. But two families in the state have named their children after these terms with a hope that they would remind people about taking precautions.
On the day of people’s curfew on March 22, Corona was born to Ragini Tripathi and Bablu Tripathi at Sohgoura village of Gorakhpur. It was her uncle who named the girl after the virus that has caused the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I took permission from my sister-in-law, the mother of the baby, and named her as Corona, as the girl is the symbol of unity in the fight against novel corona virus,” the girl’s uncle said.
A week later, a baby boy was born to Neeraja Devi and Pawan Prasad at Khukhundu Primary Health Centre in Deoria on March 29. Within hours, the boy’s father named named him after lockdown.
“In my view, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the right step to impose lockdown in the entire nation to save us from the deadly virus,” said Prasad. “My boy will remind everyone to take precautions against COVID-19, to save themselves and the nation,” he said.
