India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets on Saturday (July 6) with both the openers – KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma – hitting a century each. India has already qualified for the semi finals along with Australia, England and New Zealand.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat against India at Leeds.

Despite losing four wickets in the first 12 overs of the match, Sri Lanka bounced back and managed to put up a decent 265 run target for India with a steady partnership between Angelo Mathews and HDRL Thirimanne during the middle overs.

Jasprit Bumrah got India its first two wickets early in the game as he picked skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera. He also dismissed Mathews after he scored a century. Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav picked one wicket each.

Mathews’ 113 off 128 balls and his 124 run partnership along with Thirimanne (53 off 68 balls) was the game changer for Sri Lanka.

The second innings started with boundaries raining all across Leeds. Rohit (103 off 94) scored his fifth century while Rahul (111 off 118) hit his first one this World Cup. Their opening stand of 189 runs decided the fate of the match. Rohit was declared the Player of the Match.

India will slide up to the top of the points table if South Africa beat Australia in the last league stage match.
