"Time to wake up", wife pens open letter to gather support for Sanjiv Bhatt

India, it’s time to wake up, urged Shweta, wife of sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, hours after her husband was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a 30-year old custodial death case.

The case pertains to a communal riot in Gujarat’s Jamnagar in 1990, during which, the police had detained over a hundred people, who were later released.

One of the detainees died in hospital after being released and subsequently, an FIR was registered against Bhatt, who was the then ASP Jamnagar Rural Division, and six other policemen, for custodial torture.

A Sessions Court on Thursday convicted Bhatt and awarded him life imprisonment. Soon after, Bhatt’s wife took to the social media and voiced her concern along with the hashtag #JusticeforSanjivBhatt

“He (Bhatt) keeps fighting his battle against this vindictive government, the question is till what end are you prepared to remain as silent spectators?” she asked, addressing the Indian Police Service Association, on Facebook.

“India, Its time to wake up. Today it is us, tomorrow it can be you,” she concluded.

Along with the Facebook post, she also attached excerpts of Bhatt’s statement and expert medical opinion.
