Thunder storms and dust are likely in several areas of north India on May 29-30, bringing the much-needed relief from the intense heatwave, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Sunday (May 24), IMD had issued a red colour-coded alert for May 25-26 when the existing heatwave conditions are expected to peak in north India. Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh have reported blistering heat for days with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius in many places.

Today (May 25), the highest day temperature in Rajasthan was recorded in Churu at 47.5 degrees celsius, while Allahabad was the hottest region in Uttar Pradesh at 46.3 degrees celsius. In the national capital, the maximum temperature was 44 degrees celsius. Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the Regional Meteorological Department, IMD, said that due to a western disturbance and the easterly winds, dust storm and thunderstorm is predicted in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on May 29-30.

The wind speed is also expected to be around 50-60 kilometres per hour during this period, and it will bring relief from the intense heatwave condition. A western disturbance is basically a cyclonic storm which originates in the Mediterranean Sea and travels across the Central Asian countries. When it comes in contact with the Himalayan region, it brings rains to the hills as well as the plains.

Heat wave conditions in some parts of India and severe heat wave conditions at some isolated pockets are expected over Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha during two days – May 25-27, IMD stated in its daily bulletin.
