Modi has no time to wipe farmers’ tears, says Priyanka Gandhi at Kisan Panchayat

Congress in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday (February 20) trained her guns at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the contentious farm laws, saying “the government is weak and will eventually back down”.

Addressing a Kisan Panchayat in Muzaffarnagar, Priyanka taunted PM Modi for going all around the world, but not having time to meet protesting farmers and “wipe their tears’.

“The farmers have been camping on Delhi’s borders for three months now. At least 215 farmers have died, their power and water supplies have been disconnected. They were protesting peacefully, but Delhi’s borders were turned into international borders,” Priyanka said.

The Congress general secretary lambasted BJP leaders for labeling the protesting farmers as terrorists. “The Prime Minister ridiculed the farmers, calling them ‘andolan jivi’. When farmer leader Rakesh Tikait cries, our Prime Minister thinks it’s funny,” she said.

The senior Congress leader tore a copy of the farm laws in public, accusing Modi of favouring “his big corporate friends”. “One of the three laws says that private mandis (marketplace) will be organised where no tax will have to be paid. This means, government mandis will be finished. The second law talks about contract farming. Your complaints won’t be heard in courts, you won’t be able to fight for your rights,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said.

Farmers have been protesting at the borders of Delhi since November 28, 2020. They want the three farm laws repealed and legalise Minimum Support Price (MSP) while the Centre is, at the most, willing to suspend them for 18 months.
