The opposition parties on Monday (December 16) demanded judicial enquiry on the crackdown on students of Jamia Islamia University, when they protested against the Citizenship amendment act.

While addressing the media, Azad said, “Police can’t enter into university premises without permission of Vice Chancellor. If they weren’t permitted, how did police, which comes under Central government, enter into the campus? We condemn it. There should be a judicial inquiry.”

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury and CPI’s D Raja were also present at the press conference and condemned the police action against Jamia students.

Alleging that the police violated rules, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha asked, “PM says Congress is behind the protests. Had the Congress been capable of inciting such violence, you wouldn’t have been in power. It’s a baseless allegation. I condemn it. Only the ruling party, PM, HM and their cabinet are responsible for it Citizenship Amendment Act.”

Reacting to the on going protest, Sitaram Yechury questioned, “What is happening in India is unacceptable in democracy. This is not a Hindu-Muslim issue. Citizenship cannot be linked with religion. The concerned party is destroying higher education for a purpose. Where is the Home Minister while all these atrocities are happening?”

Calling for a countrywide protest by the left parties, D Raja, said, “We are here to condemn what is happening in Jamia. This is exactly how not a democracy should function. Who are those who ordered the police to enter the campus and attack the students? We are leading to a civil war kind of situation. As far as Left parties are concerned, we have given a call for countrywide protest on December 19. We hope that the protest will be a massive one. We appeal to all secular, democratic forces to join in the protest.”

Similarly, Kapil Sibal promised to fight against the CAA and said, “It is very dangerous when violence erupts because of decisions taken by the government.” “We will take this further. Supreme Court will give its verdict on CAB on December 18. There should be a commission set up,” he stressed.
