A new air defence command is likely to be set up at Prayagraj by the second week of October this year, reports said.
The development comes at a time when border tensions between India and China have heightened following the clash in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in mid-June in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred.
According to news agency ANI, the military affairs department has hastened this process of preparing the structure of the air defence command under the Indian Air Force.
“Efforts are being made to put everything together and announce the creation of the air defence command at Prayagraj around the Air Force Day on October 8 this year,” it quoted government sources as saying.
The command, whose aim is to integrate the resources of the Army, Navy, and the Air Force to enhance the security of Indian skies, is proposed to be set up alongside the Central Command Headquarters of the IAF, the report said.
The Department of Military Affairs is helmed by Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, who had given the mandate for the creation of integrated military commands along with theatre commands, the report said.
