Madras HC grants bail to former AIADMK councillor in Subhasri death case

Former AIADMK councillor S Jayagopal, who is accused of errecting an illegan banner which fell on an unsuspecting techie Subhasri leading to her death has been granted bail by Madras High court on Monday (November 11).

Jayagopal denied any role in the installation of illegal banners for his son’s wedding. Judge C Karthikeyan who heard the case chose to grant him a conditional bail.

On September 12 one of the banners flew accidentally and hit Subhasri who was riding a bike on her way back from work on the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road. As a result Subhasri lost her balance and fell down. A water tanker which was closely following Subhasri on the highway fail to brake suddenly and ran over killing her instantly.

Jayagopal, and his brother-in-law Meghanathan were directed by the Madras high court to pay a sum of ₹25,000 each for treatment of poor patients to the Cancer Institute Chennai and Government Stanley Hospital.

The court also ordered Jayagopal to stay in Madurai to avoid influencing witnesses and appear in the police station every day to sign. Meghanathan will have to sign his bail register in Chennai till both of them receive their summons from Alandur court.

After they receive their summons from the Alandur court, Jayagopal and his brother-in-law will surrender at the Pallikaranai police station.

The petitioner’s counsel stated that the accused Jayagopal and his brother-in-law Meghanathan are lodged in jail for the past 45 days and that they are ready to accept any conditions devised by the court.

Jayagopal and his brother-in-law earlier applied for an anticipatory bail which was withdrawn and later dismissed by the Madras high court.
