Doctors' stir: Talks with CM 'fruitful'; docs may withdraw protest

The meeting between chief minister Mamata Banerjee and 31 representatives from among the agitating doctors from different medical colleges is underway at the state secretariat, Nabanna, in connection with the ongoing strike by medical practitioners.

The entire proceedings of the meeting is being covered live by the media as per the demand of the agitators. Besides the chief minister, top police and health officials are present in the meeting.

The chief minister is seen making notes while the agitators put forward their grievances.

The chief minister has allowed live coverage of her meeting with the protesting doctors at the state secretariat. The doctors had asserted again that they will not attend the meeting unless audio visual media were allowed inside the meeting room.

In a recent Medical Education Department release, it was announced that the CM had invited the protesters for talks at 3 pm. However, it had mentioned that the press will not be allowed inside the meeting room.

Healthcare services across the country were hit on Monday (June 17) as doctors in government hospitals have come out in support of the 24-hour nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association after a junior doctor was assaulted in Kolkata.

The apex medical body, IMA, said all outpatient departments (OPDs), routine operation theatre services and ward visits will be withdrawn for 24 hours from 6 am on Monday to 6 am Tuesday. Emergency and casualty services will continue to function, it said.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has decided to hear on Tuesday a petition seeking safety and security to government doctors across the country.
