Uber on Tuesday (May 26) removed nearly 600 employees from their job in India.
The company said that this marked about 25 per cent of the company’s workforce in the country. The impacted positions are around the company’s driver and rider support operations, and other functions, NDTV quoted Uber India and South Asia president Pradeep Parameswaran as saying in a statement.
According to reports, the job cuts come from across the segments, including customer and driver support, business development, legal, finance, policy, and marketing verticals.
The company has announced its decision to cut the workforce at the time when the country is under the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown.
These employees would be paid 10 to 12 weeks of salary, besides medical insurance coverage for the next six months and outplacement support, the company said. These staffers would also be allowed to retain their laptops and given the option of joining the Uber talent directory, BS quoted the company as stating.
The move comes in the backdrop of a global restructuring plan announced earlier by Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi. Its rival company, Ola, last week announced a layoff of 1,400 employees to navigate the strict coronavirus lockdown, which it said led to a 95 per cent decline in its revenue.
