Noted novelist and screenplay writer Indra Soundar Rajan died after slipping and falling in the bathroom at his residence in Madurai on November 10. He was 65 years old. His death marks the loss of a prolific literary figure in Tamil literature.

Soundar Rajan has many novels, short stories, TV serials and screenplays to his credit. His stories often dealt with the paranormal, reincarnation, divine intervention and was often inspired by true stories reported from different parts of Tamil Nadu.

His real name was P Soundar Rajan but he took his mother's name Indra as a pseudonym. The writer has said in an interview that it was a fashion in those days among writers in the late 70s to take a female's name as a pseudonym.

He was born in 1958 in Salem.

Fantasy thriller writer

This well-known Tamil author of short stories, novels, television serials, and screenplays, had readers around the world. His genre was largely fantasy, supernatural thrillers ike his novel 'Rudra Veenai', which revolved around a veena that had magical powers.

Indra Soundar Rajan's works include 'Maya Nilavu', 'En Iniya Ponnilave', 'Kadal Yuddham', 'Ragasiyamaga Oru Ragasiyam', 'Maaya Vizhigal', 'Krishnadaasi' and 'Marma Desam'. He has won may awards as a writer.

His novel “Ruthra Veenai” broke many records as a bestseller. No other TV serial has beaten the record of his ‘Marma Desam' TV serial, which is a five part anthology TV series. While the stories are purely fictitious, they explore to some extent the beliefs and real-life traditions of Tamil Nadu. One of the stories 'Vidathu Karuppu' was popular since it was a psychological thriller exploring the legend of a Hindu village deity Karuppu Sami.

Vijay TV's 'Yamirukka Bayamaen' was another of his TV serials. Some of his serials were adapted in Hindi like 'Kaal Bhairav - Ek Naya Rahasya' and aired on Star Bharat.

Soundar Rajan was employed with the TVS Group before he became a full-time writer.
