The Indian triumvirate of Prithviraj Tondaiman, Kynan Chenai, and Zoravar Singh Sandhu won the gold medal in men’s trap shooting on the eighth day of the Asian Games in China’s Hangzhou on Sunday (October 1).

In the women’s trap team event, the trio of Manisha Keer, Preeti Rajak and Rajeshwari Kumari claimed the silver medal, adding to the Indian shooting contingent’s best-ever show at the Games.

In addition, Manisha advanced to the finals as well. Kynan Chenai and Zoravar Singh Sandhu have also qualified for the individual final in the men’s competition.

Earlier in the day, Aditi Ashok carded a topsy-turvy 73 to sign off with a silver for India’s first medal in women’s golf at the Asian Games. Coming into the final day with a commanding seven-stroke lead, Aditi saw the advantage evaporate as she stumbled upon four bogeys and a double bogey against a lone birdie to slip to the second position.

India’s other two players, Pranavi Urs and Avani Prashanth, also struggled to bring home cards of 75 and 76 as the Indian women’s team ended its campaign at the fourth place.

While the gold slipped out of her hands, it was still a creditable performance from the two-time Olympian from Bangalore, who had missed a medal by a whisker at the Tokyo Games after finishing fourth.

It was India’s fourth individual medal in golf with Lakshman Singh and Shiv Kapur winning the gold in the 1982 and 2002 editions and Rajiv Mohta claiming a silver in New Delhi.

In the men’s 200m heats, India’s Amlan Borgohain finished third after clocking a timing of 21.08 seconds and advanced to the semifinal.

In the women’s compound archery, seasoned Jyothi Surekha Vennam edged out her South Korean rivals to top the qualification, while world champion Aditi Swami secured the fourth spot to also make the cut, and power India to grab the top-seeding.
