Ponniyan Selvan director Mani Ratnam recently equated fan wars on social media to random “roadside arguments” and felt it was meaningless to enter into such debates like who do you like – Ajith or Vijay?

The filmmaker, who was participating in a roundtable discussion with two other Tamil directors, Vetrimaaran and Mari Selvaraj for Galatta Plus, first hit out at the negativity on social media. According to Ratnam, social media has the privilege of anonymity so people are just spitting venom. “It is only negativity that is coming from there,” observed Ratnam, who recently made news for announcing a new film, Thug Life, with his Nayakan star Kamal Haasan.

Then addressing Karnan director Mari Selvaraj he said that he is very happy that Selvaraj said in places like Thirunelveli and Nagercoil people are not talking about the film's box-office collection but discussing if the film is good or not.

Random roadside argument

But a debate on fan wars on social media is like a random roadside argument, he said. "If it is a serious platform where it is being debated, then you can have your opinion. But this (debate that) ‘I like Ajith, I like Vijay’ doesn’t make any sense,” the filmmaker pointed out. Meanwhile, actor Trisha liked the post which featured this particular clip from the video, which has gone viral on the Internet.

Interestingly, Trisha was recently seen with Vijay in Leo and has acted opposite action star Ajith in Yennai Arindhaal, Mankatha, Ji, and Kireedam, and is supposed to be acting in his upcoming Vidamuyarchi as well.

In the video, Ratnam, however, went on to praise Mari Selvaraj’s work saying he’s happy the director raises his voice through cinema. Pointing out that he enjoys the work of Pa Ranjith, Vetrimaaran, Sudha Kongara, Madonne Ashwin, the famous director who made successful pan-India films, said Tamil cinema is lucky to have bunch of talented directors.
