Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Saturday (April 6) charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi with destroying India's dignity and democracy and accused the government of forcing opposition leaders to join the BJP.

Addressing an election event in Jaipur, the former Congress president alleged the Modi government of the past 10 years had only promoted unemployment, inflation, economic crisis, and inequality.

"This is a dictatorship"

"Today our country's democracy is in danger. Democratic institutions are being destroyed and a conspiracy is being hatched to change our Constitution," she said.

“This is a dictatorship and we all will give a reply to this," she added. "Considering himself great, Modiji is tearing apart the dignity of the country and its democracy."

Addressing the gathering earlier, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi denounced the arrests of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren.

The Opposition, she said, was under attack under Modi’s rule.

"Unemployment and inflation at peak and paper leaks are happening in every state. There no one to listen to the poor and the farmers," she said.
