The INDIA alliance is confident of forming a government after winning the Lok Sabha elections on June 4, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday (May 15).

Addressing the media in Lucknow in the company of the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, Kharge said the Opposition was in “a strong position” after four rounds of the Lok Sabha elections.

New government

“People have decided to let go of PM (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi. On June 4, the INDIA alliance will form the government. This election is an important one to save the democracy and the constitution,” he said.

Kharge added: "We all should work together to protect the future, democracy, and the constitution of the country, otherwise we will become slaves again.

“If there won't be a democracy but autocracy and dictatorship, how will you elect someone with your ideology?”

INDIA candidates

Kharge charged that wherever any senior BJP leader was contesting, opposition party leaders were being stopped from filing nominations.

“I have seen in Hyderabad that a woman candidate of the BJP was checking women's identities by removing their burqa. Is this how free and fair elections are conducted?"

INDIA promises

The Congress leader said the INDIA alliance will fulfil all the promises it has made to the people.

"I promise that if an INDIA government comes to power, we will give 10 kg ration. We have implemented guarantees in Karnataka and Telangana and we will do it when we will come to power," Kharge said.

Akhilesh Yadav

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP was getting bogged down by its own negativity.

"I want to congratulate people from the press for the golden period beginning on June 4, that will be a day of 'freedom of press',” he said.

He insisted that the INDIA alliance will win a whopping 79 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

“There is the fight in just one seat that is in 'Quito'," he added.
