Police shoot and kill history-sheeter in Salem


On Thursday (May 2) Salem police officials shot a history-sheeter after he allegedly attacked a police officer in a bid to escape from the police.

The history-sheeter identified as S Kathirvel (25) of Thathanur in Kariyapatti of Salem district has been facing a couple of murder cases apart from other petty cases. According to police, a month ago, Ganesan, a local trader was found dead on Veeranam road in Salem district. Police initially suspected it to be an accident, however after the autopsy reports it was found that he was murdered.

Later, police registered a case and included they six people along with Kathirvel as suspectes and were on the lookout for them. On Wednesday (May 1), police managed to arrest Kathirvel during a vehicle check-up near Veeranam.

During investigation, Kathirvel had allegedly told Subramani, inspector, Karipatti police station that the weapons used to kill Ganesan were kept in Kullampatti in Ayothiyapattinam of Salem district. When police took Kathirvel to Kullampatti to recover the weapons, in a bid to escape from the police, Kathirvel allegedly attacked a police officer.

However, police in a self-defense, shot Kathirvel in which he sustained injuries. Later, he was rushed to the Salem Government Hospital, were he was declared brought dead. Police have registered a case and are probing into the matter.
