One detained in Trichy jewellery shop robbery

One of the suspects allegedly involved in robbing gold, silver and platinum jewellery, worth crores, from a shop in Trichy, was detained at Madapuram in Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu late on Thursday.

The police took the accused Manikandan into custody, after a 5-kg gold bar he had with him in a bag matched the barcode of the jewellery robbed from the shop on Wednesday. According to the police, Manikandan had come there on a bike with another person – Suresh, who too is said to have been involved in the theft. However, Suresh fled the spot on seeing the cops.

Police on interrogating Manikandan found that Suresh is a relative of Murugan, who apparently played a role in one of the past bank robberies.

He also allegedly told the cops that eight persons were involved in the Trichy jewellery heist, which the police suspect could have been orchestrated by Murugan. Parents and relatives of Suresh are also being inquired to find out his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, a new CCTV footage of the robbery shows one of the robbers looting the jewellery from the stands one by one and placing them in a bag in a relaxed manner, after breaking the glass door open with a screwdriver. Later, another robber joins him in stealing cash from a drawer.
