Heat wave warning in Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Telangana


The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave warning for isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

In Tamil Nadu, the heat wave is likely to persist till May 7, while isolated pockets of the neighbouring states may witness heat waves till May 10.

“Heat wave conditions in some parts are very likely over Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh; in isolated pockets over interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Vidarbha and West Rajasthan,” the IMD said in a weather bulletin.

A heat wave warning is issued usually when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degree Celsius or more for palins and 37 degree Celsius or more for coastal regions.

On May 6, parts of Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures above 40 degree Celsius including Thiruthani (43.5 degree Celsius) and Karur Paramathi (42 degree Celsius). Madurai, Palayamkottai and Salem recorded temperatures of 40.8, 40.5 and 40.5 degree Celsius, respectively. Neighbouring regions such as Trichy (41.9), Chennai Airport (41.2) and Vellore (41.1) also recorded high temperatures through Monday.

The coastal areas in Tamil Nadu recorded slightly lower temperatures on May 6 with Chennai (Nungambakkam) witnessing a temperature of 38.6 degree Celsius. Other coastal areas too recorded below 40 degree Celsius temperatures: Cuddalore (36 degree Celsius), Kanyakumari (32.9 degree Celsius), Nagapattinam (38.2 degree Celsius), Pamban (34 degree Celsius) and Thoothukudi (34 degree Celsius).

According to IMD, isolated parts of the state may also witness heavy rainfall on May 7. Another weather forecast agency, Skymet has predicted that there might be rainfall in some parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Vellore, Salem and Krishnagiri in next 48 hours, bringing some relief from heat.
