Former Tamil Nadu MLA Vetrivel succumbs to COVID-19

Former Tamil Nadu MLA P Vetrivel died of coronavirus on Thursday (October 15), becoming the third elected representative from the state to succumb to the virus after Congress MP H Vasanthakumar and DMK MLA J Anbalagan.

The 59-year-old Vetrivel, who was the AMMK treasurer and a close confidant of the party’s general secretary TTV Dhinakaran, was undergoing treatment at Sri Ramachandra Hospital in Chennai. He died at 6:40 pm due to septic shock, reports quoted the hospital as saying.

He was hospitalised on October 6 and shifted to intensive care on October 9, reports said.

Vetrivel began his political career in the Congress before switching over to the AIADMK. After the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, he had joined Team Dhinakaran. In 2017, he was disqualified by the Speaker for withdrawing support to CM E. Palaniswami.
