COVID-19: Tamil Nadu records highest single-day spike, 21 new deaths

Tamil Nadu reported 21 new deaths due to the COVID-19 infection on Tuesday (June 9), apart from 1,685 fresh cases, the highest reported so far in a single day, said the state health department.

Tamil Nadu has recorded more than 1,000 cases over the last 10 days.

With the new figures, the COVID-19 tally in the state stands at 34,914 and the death toll is now at 307, according to the health department’s daily bulletin. The bulletin also said 16 people in total died due to comorbidities.

So far, a total of 18,325 patients have been discharged from hospitals post COVID-19 treatment. On June 9, 798 patients were cured and discharged from various hospitals across the state.

Of the 1,685 fresh cases reported on June 9, five people who tested positive for COVID-19 had returned from abroad, while 31 who tested positive were passengers who had returned to their home towns from other states in India.

Out of the 1,685 new cases, Chennai reported 1,242 cases, followed by 158 cases from Chengalpattu, 90 new cases from Thiruvallur, 32 cases from Kancheepuram.

Of the total number of cases in Tamil Nadu, state capital Chennai accounts for 24,545 cases, followed by Thiruvallur with 1,476 cases, and Chengalpattu with 2,146 cases reported so far.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has a total of 77 COVID-19 testing facilities, out of which 44 are government-run and 33 are private entities.
